D.C.M. London Gazette 14 January 1916:
‘For conspicuous gallantry. Hearing a wounded man of another battalion, who was lying out in the open, calling for assistance, he, accompanied by Captain Campbell, jumped over the parapet, and together they carried the wounded man to safety. Private Liddell’s clothing was hit in several places by the enemy’s bullets.’

William Liddell, a native of Leith, Edinburgh, served with the 9th Divisional Company, Army Cyclist Corps during the Great War on the Western Front from 12 May 1915, and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He died of wounds on 25 February 1916, and is buried in Gunners Farm Military Cemetery, France.
