Rowland Astin was born in Burnley, Lancashire, in 1895, and attested for the East Lancashire Regiment at Clitheroe, Lancashire, on 14 September 1914. He served with the 9th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 4 September 1915, before transferring to the Labour Corps on 1 January 1918. He contracted malaria in July 1918, whilst serving in Macedonia, and transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 15 April 1919.

Frederick Spartan Miller was born in Ramsgate, Kent, in 1872, and served with the Essex Regiment during the Great War, before transferring to the Norfolk Regiment.

Charles Seelig was born in London in 1891, and served with the 3rd Independent Labour Company, Middlesex Regiment during the Great War.
