Three: Petty Officer W. F. Collyer, Royal Navy

Frederick William Collyer was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, on 8 August 1890, and was employed as a Collier. He joined the Royal Navy on 19 July 1909, and was advanced Able Seaman on 16 January 1911. Transferring to the Royal Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth on 26 July 1914, he was recalled to the Royal Navy following the outbreak of the Great War, and served in H.M.S. Virginian, a commercial liner converted for use as an Armed Merchant Cruiser, from 9 December 1914. He was advanced Leading Seaman on 16 April 1917, and was still serving in Virginian when she was struck by a torpedo fired from the German submarine U-102 on 21 August 1917. Promoted Petty Officer on 1 June 1918, he was shore demobilised on 7 February 1919.
