James Ernest George Jones was born in Plymouth, Devon, in July 1898. He served during the Great War with the Royal Engineers on the Western Front from 5 July 1915. After the war he was employed as a fisherman, and also joined the Royal Naval Reserve at Milford Haven in February 1924.

Jones was mobilised as an Engineman with the outbreak of the Second War, and after postings to Chatham and H.M.S.
Eaglet at Liverpool, he was posted to the trawler Lady Beryl in October 1939. He served with her on anti-submarine duties in the Irish Sea and the North Sea, before transferring with her to operate from the Orkney Islands in July 1943. Jones went with the Lady Beryl to operate out of Trinidad in June 1944. He was demobilized in December 1945.
