Richard Dowling was born in Sandymount, Co. Wicklow, in 1894 and attested for the Coldstream Guards at Birmingham on 17 May 1913. He served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 13 August 1914, and was wounded in action by gunshot to the left arm on 15 September 1916, and was invalided to England. He transferred to the Guards Machine Gun Battalion in February 1917, and was again invalided to England in August 1918, this time due to an enlarged thyroid gland. He was discharged due to sickness on 9 April 1919, and was awarded a Silver War Badge.
