Three: Acting Leading Seaman H. P. Smith, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Howe Battalion, Royal Naval Division, who was rescued from the defensively armed merchant ship Rose Lea when she was torpedoed by the U-62 in March 1917

Harold Plesents Smith was born on 5 November 1895, and joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 12 February 1913. After service in Belgium and France with the Howe Battalion R.N.D., he was assigned to Defensively Armed Merchant Ships and was reported missing when D.A.M.S. Rose Lea was torpedoed on 14 March 1917 by U-62, whilst on a voyage from Cardiff to Malta with a cargo of coal, 230 miles west of Bishop Rock. There were no casualties and Smith was reported rescued in Victory on 21 March 1917.
