William Rose was born at Yeovil, Somerset, on 16 June 1894, and enlisted into the Royal Marine Artillery on 16 April 1914. He was promoted to Gunner 2nd class on 28 September 1914 and served with the Royal Marine Brigade at Dunkirk, where he was wounded on 18 October 1914 (1914 Star but not entitled to clasp). He was promoted to Gunner on 18 December 1915 and afterward served with the R.M.A. Howitzer Brigade in France until October 1916, and then aboard H.M.S. Euryalus until February 1918.
