Vivian Thomas Harland was born in Slough, Buckinghamshire. He served under the alias of ‘George Snapes’ with the Scots Guards during the Second Boer War. He married and was the husband of Mrs. E. K. Harland, of ‘Forest View’, Layton Road, Upper Parkstone, Dorset.
Harland re-enlisted under his alias at Southampton for service during the Great War, and served as a Sergeant on the Western Front with the 10th (Service) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He died of wounds, aged 37, on the Western Front, 15 December 1915, and is buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
