Henry Watkins was born in Mayhill, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in 1876 and attested for the Coldstream Guards at Taunton, Somerset, on 24 December 1894. He served with them in South Africa during the Boer War from 21 October 1899 to 3 September 1902, before transferring to the Army Reserve upon his return to England. He was discharged on 23 December 1906, after 12 years’ service. Emigrating to South Africa and joining the Prison Service, he attested for the South African Heavy Artillery for service during the Great War at Cape Town on 2 July 1917, and served with the 74th Siege Battery on the Western Front from 2 November 1917.
