Edwin Daniels was born in Storrington, Brighton, in July 1864. He joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in February 1886. Daniels advanced to Chief Stoker in March 1897, and subsequent service included with H.M.S. Terrible, March 1898 - February 1902, and at H.M.S. Victory, February 1908 - September 1914. He was ‘Shore Pensioned’, 25 September 1914 (entitled to British War Medal only).
