60 clasps issued to Alecto for Sierra Leone, including 8 to Royal Marines.

Herbert Edward McLeod was born in London on 22 May 1876, and enlisted there for the Royal Marines on 27 October 1892. Posted to the Chatham Division he served aboard H.M.S. Alecto in the expedition to Sierra Leone, ‘employed in Port Lokko Creek during expedition to Karene etc.’ Taking passage aboard Centurion for service at the Naval Depot, Wei-Hai-Wei, during the Boxer rebellion, he was ‘landed with N. China Field Force’ in July 1900 and served with ‘2nd Peking Relief Force’ in August 1900 (Medal with clasp). He enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve in July 1908, and served during the Great War with the Chatham Division R.M.L.I. at Dunkirk from 20 September to 2 October, 1914, and in the defence of Antwerp from 3-9 October 1914 (1914 Star with clasp, British War and Victory Medals). He was discharged on 3 March 1919.
