Francis Leopold Victor Swaine was born on 17 April 1876, and was commissioned from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, as Second Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards on 29 January 1896. Promoted Lieutenant on 11 May 1898, he served with the 1st Battalion during the Nile Expedition of 1898, taking part in the Battle of Omdurman, 2 September 1898. He subsequently served as a Special Service Officer in South Africa during the Boer War, where he was present in the operations in the Orange Free State, April to May 1900; and in the operations in the Orange River Colony, May to November 1900, including the actions at Biddulphsberg and Wittebergen, 1-29 July 1900. He also held the appointment of Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards from 30 May to 1 July 1900. Promoted Captain on 6 July 1904, he transferred to the Reserve of Officers, and saw subsequent service during the Great War, where he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 4 January 1917) and advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel.
