Thomas Preistley was born in Waterford, Ireland, and attested for the Scots Guards at London in May 1880. He served with the 2nd Battalion in Egypt, February - July 1885. Priestley advanced to Corporal in May 1886, and Sergeant in March 1888. He transferred to the 2/Royal Guernsey Light Infantry in August 1891, and to the King’s Royal Rifle Corps Permanent Staff in January 1896.

Priestley was discharged, 31 May 1906, having served for 26 years and 14 days. He re-engaged aged 51 as a Colour Sergeant in the Scots Guards in September 1914, and served at Home September 1914- November 1919.
