Three: Farrier Sergeant W. Cook, Royal Horse Artillery

Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (1279. Farr. Sgt. W. Cook. I/A. Bde. R.H.A.) minor official correction to last letter of surname; Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 1 clasp, Tel-El-Kebir (14797. Far: Sergt. W. Cook. H/1st... R.A.); Khedive’s Star 1882, unnamed as issued, pitting from star, therefore very fine (3) £300-£400

Farrier Sergeant was born in Stone, near Tenterden, Kent, in 1847 and attested for the Royal Artillery at Woolwich on 3 November 1866. He transferred as a Shoeing Smith to ‘B’ Battery, Royal Horse Artillery on 25 August 1870, and embarked for India in October 1876. Promoted Farrier Sergeant on 11 May 1877, he transferred to ‘A’ Battery, and saw active service in the Second Afghan War. He subsequently served with ‘H’ Battery in Egypt, and was present at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir on 13 September 1882. Returning to India, he was invalided to England in 1885, and was discharged as medically unfit on 21 July 1885, after 18 years and 261 days’ service.

Sold with the recipient’s original Parchment Certificate of Discharge; two original portrait photograph of the recipient with his family; and copied service papers, medal rolls, and other research.
