Donald Cameron served with the 72nd Highlanders during the Second Afghan War, and accompanied the regiment on its 310 mile march under Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Roberts from Kabul to Kandahar in August 1880; at the close of the march on 1 September 1880, ‘only two Pipers, Corporal Donald Cameron and Sandy Corbett (the latter being carried in a dhoolie until within a mile of the city) were able to play the Regiment into Kandahar’. Cameron subsequently saw service in the Egyptian War of 1882, where the Highland Brigade went on to distinguish itself at the battle of Tel-El-Kebir.
