William Daniels was born at Portway, Oldbury, Worcestershire, and enlisted into the 80th Foot on 9 February 1874, aged 19 years 11 months, a labourer by trade. He joined the Regiment at Singapore on 23 February 1876, in time to participate in the closing stages of the Perak operations. He is shown as having deserted on 15 July 1877, but subsequently took part in the operations in South Africa in 1878 and 1879. He was transferred to Army Reserve on 17 June 1880.
