William Lewis was born in Bath, Somerset, and ‘was a veteran of the South African and First World wars. As a member of the regular army, in which he held the rank of corporal, he served in India and Egypt before fighting with the Rifle Corps in South Africa.

He was recalled to the colours at the beginning of the first world war, and served in France as a sergeant.... After his demobilisation, he worked for 30 years at the old Clevedon Brickworks in Strode Road.

A prominent member of the Buffalos, in which he held the rank of R.O.H., Mr Lewis was at one time the hon. secretary of the old Prince of Wales Lodge, Clevedon. He was a one-member of the British Legion and the Clevedon Liberal Club.’ (copy of obituary dated from 1962 refers)

In later life Lewis resided at 6 Lower Queen’s Road, Clevedon.
