Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (Serjt. John Pitt, 1st Bn. 23rd R.W. Fusrs.) with contemporary silver top riband buckle, minor edge bruising, otherwise good very fine £280-£320

John Pitt was born in Clevedon, Somerset. He attested for 23rd Foot at Bristol in January 1855. Pitt served with the 1st Battalion during the Indian Mutiny, and advanced to Colour-Sergeant in February 1859. He was discharged ‘medically unfit’ in 1861, and was appointed Drill Sergeant with the Bromyard Rifle Corps - later ‘D’ Company, Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers.

In the 1860’s Pitt changed his name to John Pitt Gamlin. He died in March 1869.
