Brian ‘Ginger’ Garland ‘on the 13th December, 1973... took his leave from the Force after serving for 20 years in Bulawayo and Salisbury.

Born in Gloucester, England on 6th July, 1935, Brian moved to Rhodesia at an early age and attended junior schools at Cecil Rhodes in Gwelo, completing his education at St. Charles College, Pietermaritzburg, Natal.

He returned to Rhodesia to join the Police in December 1953 and was stationed in Bulawayo Urban for the first 10 years of service. Promotion to Sergeant in 1963 brought a posting to Support Unit and an opportunity for Ginger to display his flair for instructional work. He served in many parts of the country, with the Unit, until 1968 when he transferred to the instructional staff at Depot.... He was promoted to Staff Inspector in 1971.’ (
Outpost, January 1974, refers)

Garland was one of 76 Europeans and 132 African police sent to Blantyre in Nyasaland to assist in maintaining law and order during the disturbances of February 1959. He was also an early member of the Police Dog Handlers Section, which ‘in 1958... was formed providing European handlers from Duty Uniform Branch for beat work in Salisbury and Bulawayo. “Ginger” Garland volunteered in 1958 and was posted to Bulawayo. In 1960 when riots broke out in Bulawayo, the first place the rioters attacked outside the township was the Police Dog Section. Constables Garland, Waller, Shind and I had an interesting hour or so repelling about 600 aggressive people with our dogs and truncheons. We eventually beat a hasty retreat when the flying rocks and stones got the better of us. We were relieved by Supt. C. Payne with his Sterling Machine Gun.’ (
Memories of the Early Days of the BSAP Dog Section, by D. Riley refers)

Sold with copied research, with photographic images of recipient in uniform - including as part of Alpha Group, which was sent to Nyasaland in February 1959.
