Ahmed Khan served in the Indian Army from 1911 to 1935. He saw active service during the Great War in Egypt, on the Western Front, in Iraq and Mesopotamia, and in Palestine. He subsequently served with the 5th (Burma) Battalion, 8th Punjab Regiment from 1923-24, ands was advanced to his ultimate rank of Jemadar.

Milkha Singh was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, together with an annuity, whilst serving with the 10th (Training) Battalion, 12th Frontier Force Regiment.
