Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Cape Colony (6724 Pte. H. Ramsay, 2: R. Highrs.) extremely fine £300-£400

Hugh Ramsay was born in Wolfhill Village, Cargill, Perth, in November 1878. He enlisted for the 2nd Battalion, Royal Highlanders at Perth in August 1897. He advanced to Lance-Corporal in 1898, and served with the Battalion during the Second Boer War. He received a gunshot wound to the left leg at Magersfontein, 11 December 1899, and was discharged ‘medically unfit for further service’, 21 August 1900.

Ramsay attempted to re-engage as a Special Reservist with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Highlanders, for service during the Great War. However he was discharged as ‘medically unfit’ after just seven days, 12 October 1914. He was subsequently employed in Broughty Ferry Harbour.
