Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Cape Colony (not entitled), (S. Callow. P.O. 1st. Cl. H.M.S. Barracouta) edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine £80-100

Also entitled to East and West Africa medal for Benin River 1894, Great War pair and L.S. & G.C. medal. He is not entitled to the clasp for Cape Colony.

Samuel Callow was born on 21 May 1873, at Plumstead, Kent, and joined the Navy as a Boy 2nd class on 1 September 1888, aged 15 years 6 months. He served in the Benin River expedition in 1894 whilst aboard H.M.S. Philomel, now rated as an Able Seaman. He was advanced to Leading Seaman in April 1895, to Petty Officer 1st class in June 1896, to Acting Chief Petty Officer in December 1902, and to Chief Petty Officer in December 1903, the rate he retained until the end of his career. Whilst serving in H.M.S. Barracouta, June 1897 to October 1900, he took part in the operations in South Africa. He was ‘traced’ for medal [L.S. & G.C.] on 27 January 1913, but his record of service does not say when this was issued. He was discharged to ‘shore’ for pension on 31 May 1913, but was mobilised once more on 2 August 1914 and, until March 1916 was based in Chatham and then moved to the base at Immingham (Wallington) until demobilised on 8 May 1919.

Sold with copied record of service.
