William McCormick was born in Ballinderry, Lisburn, Co. Antrim in 1847, and attested for the Royal Artillery at Belfast on 5 December 1868. Posted to F/A Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, he served in India from 13 November 1869 to 30 April 1875, and again from 19 October 1876 to 9 March 1882, and saw service during the Second Afghan War. He was discharged on 4 December 1889, after 21 years’ service.
