Norman Scalpa McCrummen was born at Zante, Ionian Islands, on 24 May 1834, son of Captain John McCrummen, 11th Regiment. He was appointed Ensign in the 74th Highlanders on 23 November 1852; Lieutenant, 8 September 1854; Captain 17 June 1860. He served in the Indian Mutiny and was present at the storm and capture of the Town and Fort of Nurgoond (Medal). He retired on 17 November 1867, and died at Dunoon on 20 October 1871.
