John Navan was born in Walsall, Staffordshire, and attested for the 80th Foot at the town of his birth in December 1873. He served with the Regiment in Perak, and also in South Africa (entitled to South Africa Medal with ‘1878-9’ clasp). Navan transferred to Army Reserve in June 1880.
