Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Talavera (Robert Carew, Capt. 82nd Foot.) minor edge bruising, otherwise nearly extremely fine £1,800-£2,200

Provenance: Christie’s October 1981.

25 clasps for Talavera to the 82nd Foot, including 3 as single clasps.

Captain Robert Carew commanded the company of the 82nd Foot in the 2nd Battalion of Detachments at the battle of Talavera. According to the Challis Peninsula roll and other sources, he appears to also been present at the siege of Tarifa, Burgos, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle and Orthes, but did not claim the clasps for these latter actions. The regimental history states that he was wounded, probably slight, in a skirmish four days before the battle of Orthes. He afterwards served in North America and was present at the siege of Fort, Erie in August 1814. Carew retired from the army on the half-pay of the 82nd Foot with the rank of Major.

Sold with two compact discs containing some 300 images of 82nd Foot muster and pay lists from 1797 to 1815.
