A Great War 1917 ‘Battle of Langemarck’ M.M. awarded to Corporal W. Winship, Northumberland Fusiliers

M.M. London Gazette 2 November 1917. The original recommendation states:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and initiative in leading his platoon during the attack on the Langemarck - Zonnebeke Road on August 16th 1917. After his platoon commander and sergeant had become casualties he took command and was the first to tackle any strong point. When the line was temporarily held up he attended the wounded under heavy shell and machine gun fire, and afterwards again led the platoon until wounded.’

William Winship served during the Great War with the 8th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers in the French theatre of war from 13 July 1915. He was awarded the M.M. for his gallantry during the Battle of Langemarck, Ypres, 16 - 18 August 1917, during which the Battalion suffered 5 officers and 38 other ranks killed, 4 officers and 227 other ranks wounded.

The Battalion were awarded 10 M.M.s for action on the 16th August. Winship was entitled to a Silver War Badge.
