David J. Poley served during the Great War with the 1/6th (Glamorgan) Battalion, Welsh Regiment (Territorial Force) in the French theatre of war from 29 October 1914. The Battalion became the Pioneer Battalion for the 1st Division, and served with them on the Somme, July - November 1916. Poley was discharged 14 March 1917 (entitled to Silver War Badge).
