A Great War ‘Neuve Chapelle’ D.C.M. awarded to Company Sergeant-Major J. H. Johnson, 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, who died of wounds in October 1915

D.C.M. London Gazette 30 June 1915:

‘For conspicuous courage and coolness displayed at Neuve Chapelle on 10th March 1915, when, in the face of a heavy fire, he reorganised the men under his command.’

6460 C.S.M. J. H. Johnson served with the 2nd Lincolns in France and Flanders from 5 November 1914, winning the D.C.M. at Neuve Chapelle the following March. He was wounded in the action of Bois Grenier, 25 September 1915, having been shot in the arm and leg. After receiving attention at the field dressing station, he was recovering at the 3rd Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, but died from his wounds on 6 October 1915.

His brother, 6459 Corporal G. E. Johnson, 2nd Lincolns, also won the D.C.M. for gallantry in 1918. Sold with copied research including news cuttings and letter from his commanding officer to his widow.
