Sidney Herbert Williamson was born in Paddington, London, in January 1862, and attested for the East Lancashire Regiment at Chatham in December 1882. He was advanced to Corporal in April 1884, and to Colour Sergeant in August 1888, and, after a brief spell as Acting Regimental Sergeant Major, was advanced to Quarter Master Sergeant in August 1891. He served with the 1st Battalion, as the senior N.C.O., during the Relief of Chitral operations in 1895.

Williamson continued to serve with the Regiment during the Second Boer War, and was present during the operations in the Orange Free State, February - May 1900, including actions at Karee Siding, Vet River and Zand River; operations in Orange River Colony; operations in the Transvaal in May 1900, including action near Johannesburg; operations in the Transvaal, 30 November 1900 - October 1901; and operations in Orange River Colony, October 1901 - March 1902. He was commissioned Lieutenant and Quarter Master in January 1902, and advanced to Honorary Captain in January 1912.

Williamson retired on 12 January 1913, after nearly 31 years’ service with the Colours. He was recalled for service with the outbreak of the Great War, and served at the Depot Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment. He was advanced to Honorary Major in July 1917, and was finally discharged on 15 August 1919. Strongly recommended by his Colonel and fellow officers, this exemplary soldier was appointed as a Military Knight of Windsor, but died before he could take up his appointment on 22 November 1928.
