W. H. Pelling attested for the Rifle Brigade and served with them in South Africa during the Boer War, and as Regimental Sergeant Major during the Great War on the Western Front. He was awarded the Military Cross whilst serving as R.S.M. of the 3rd Battalion in the 1917 New Year’s Honours’ List, and was subsequently commissioned Lieutenant (Quartermaster) in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 18 June 1918.
