The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O.B.E. (Military) Officer’s 1st type breast badge, silver-gilt (hallmarks for London 1919); 1914-15 Star (Capt. H. L. Meagher. R.F.A.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Capt. H. L. Meagher.); Territorial Decoration, G.V.R., silver and silver-gilt (hallmarks for London 1919), the reverse privately engraved ‘Capt. H. L. Meagher, R.F.A. 13-3-19’, with integral top riband bar, in Royal Mint case of issue; Volunteer Force Long Service Medal, E.VII.R. (Lieut: H. L. Meagher. 1/Nth’ld R.G.A.V.) about extremely fine (6) £400-£500

Henry Louis Meagher was born in Waterford, Ireland on 23 January 1872, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Meagher, Royal Garrison Artillery, and was educated at the Catholic University, Dublin. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 1st Northumbrian Volunteer Artillery on 27 June 1900, and was promoted Lieutenant on 27 June 1903, and Captain on 21 March 1910. He served during the Great War in command of the 1st Northumbrian Brigade Ammunition Column, on the Western Front from 18 April 1915, before transferring to command ‘B’ Echelon, 50th Division Ammunition Column in May 1916. For his services during the Great War he was twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 14 December 1917 and 7 July 1919), and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He retired on 5 December 1923, and was granted the honorary rank of Major.
