Anthony Neal was born in Somerstown, London and attested for the Rifle Brigade in March 1856, aged 19 years. In his subsequent career of 21 years with the Colours, he witnessed active service in the Lucknow operations during the Indian Mutiny (Medal & clasp), and on the North West Frontier (Medal & clasp). He was finally discharged in March 1878.
