The three Smart brothers, all casualties of World War II, were the sons of George Henry and Lily Smart of Rhyd-y-felin, Pontypridd, Glamorgan.

Alfred Henry Smart was born in Glasgow in 1912, lived in Bath and attested for the Welch Regiment, before joining the 16th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. He died result of an accident on 17 May 1943, and is buried in Bone War Cemetery, Annaba, Algeria. 

Henry Thomas Smart was born Glasgow in 1919. He served with the 1st Battalion, Welch Regiment during the Second World War, and died at Benghazi on 28 January 1942- the casualty rolls describe him as ”presumed killed in action whilst a prisoner of war”. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.

David William Smart was born in Glamorgan in 1923. He attested for the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 12 May 1942, before transferring to the Welch Regiment on 19 June 1942, and then to the 7th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. He was killed in action on 11 August 1944, and is buried in St. Charles de Percy War Cemetery, France.
