Ewart Norman Simpson was born in Brisbane, Queensland, on 3 October 1919, and enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve in Brisbane on 3 October 1937. He served during the Second World War in H.M.A.S. Australia from 18 October 1939, and was promoted Able Seaman on 7 May 1940, serving on operations in the eastern Atlantic from mid-1940. He subsequently saw action off South East Asia, including the battles of the Coral Sea and Savo Island, and later the Guadalcanal landings. Posted next to the Minesweeper H.M.A.S. Pirie on 15 June 1943, he took part in operations off the eastern Australian coast and to New Guinea. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 18 September 1944, and following the cessation of hostilities received a Hurt Certificate on 12 October 1945. He was discharged on 30 January 1946.
