Charles James Knight was born in December 1897 and attested for the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment on 9 January 1914. He served during the Great War, first with the 2nd/5th Battalion, before transferring to the 11th Battalion, and was advanced Sergeant on 2 November 1917. He was captured at Denain, France, on 31 March 1918 and taken Prisoner of War.

Repatriated on the cessation of hostilities, he subsequently joined the Metropolitan Police, and served for most of his career with the Clapham Division. He died in August 1978.

Sold with the recipient’s certificate stating that he served in the 5th Battalion, the Queen’s during the Great War; the recipient’s Soldier’s pay Book; and a large quantity of postcards, photographs, and other ephemera; together with a postcard photograph and various Royal Army Ordnance Corps cap badges relating to Staff-Sergeant W. G. Owen.
