Provenance: Christie’s, November 1988.

John Pearce was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant into the 4th Volunteer Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, on 23 August 1907, and was transferred to the 6th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, on 1 April 1908. He was promoted to Lieutenant, 1 July 1909; Captain, 22 August 1914; Major, 8 May 1917, with precedence from 1 June 1916. He served in India and Mesopotamia from 30 December 1915, but was ineligible for the 1914-15 Star.

An extract from 6th Battalion War Diary, dated Dujailah, 7 August 1916, states:
‘The Devons sent out a small detachment to Jumailat Ridge to cut off retreat of Arabs, they however fled S.S.W. No casualties to Devons. Force of 100 rifles under Capt. Pearce.’

Major Pearce resigned his commission on 30 March 1921.
