John Charles McKenzie was born in Peterhead, Aberdeen, on 30 March 1892, and was educated at Robert Gordon’s Technical College, Aberdeen. He attested for the Gordon Highlanders at Longside on 7 June 1909, and served with the 1/4th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 19 February 1915. Advanced Company Sergeant Major, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 3/5th Battalion, and continued to serve with them in France until the cessation of hostilities.

Samuel Stewart was born in Hartshill, Lanarkshire, and attested for the Gordon Highlanders at Edinburgh. He served with the 8th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 11 October 1915, and was killed in action on 15 October 1916. He is buried in Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France.
