James Thomson was born in Cupar, Fifeshire. He served during the Great War with the 6/7th (Service) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Thomson was killed in action 12 August 1916. On the latter date the Battalion were serving as part of the 45th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division on the Somme, and were involved in the ‘attack on Switch Line (12/8) - objective taken and consolidated south-eastward from Munster Alley.’ (British Battalions on the Somme, by R. Private Thomson is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial, Somme, France.
