John Gilchrist Burnie was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, and was educated at Shrewsbury School and St. John’s College, Oxford. Following the outbreak of the Great war he attested for the 23rd (1st Sportsman’s) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front. He was killed in action at Delville, Somme Sector, on 27 July 1916, on which date the Battalion suffered 5 officers and 51 other ranks killed, and 7 officers and 225 other ranks wounded. He is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, France.
