Ralph Brown was born in Yorkshire on 1 March 1895 and attested first for the Durham Light Infantry. After service in India, where he was awarded the Delhi Durbar Medal 1911, he was advanced Acting Sergeant and served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 29 August 1914, before transferring first to the East Yorkshire Regiment and then to the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Emigrating to Australia, he enlisted in the Australian Military Forces on 1 September 1941, and was promoted Warrant Officer Class II on the same day, serving with the 46th Battalion at Bonegilla, Victoria. He served during the Second World War in Victoria, with both the 4th Training Battalion at Watsonia, and the 6th Employment Company at Tocumwal, before being discharged on account of his age on 6 September 1943. He died on 15 April 1954.
