Albert Edward Rastall was born in West Ealing, London, on 23 July 1889 and enlisted in the Royal Marines Light Infantry in London on 15 August 1907. He served in H.M.S. Alert during operations in the Persian Gulf, 1 March to 14 August 1914, and subsequently during the Great War in H.M.S. Hardinge and Dufferin. He was discharged on 21 June 1919, and received a War gratuity.
