Charles William Sibbald was born on 4 December 1878 and attested for the Durham Light Infantry on 4 January 1897. Posted to the 1st Battalion, he served in South Africa during the Boer War. Advanced Colour Sergeant, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 7 November 1914, after 17 years and 307 days’ service in the ranks, and served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War. Promoted Lieutenant on 10 June 1915, and appointed acting Captain on 17 February 1917, he saw further service on in Afghanistan and on the North West Frontier in 1919. He transferred to the Reserve of Officers, with the rank of Captain, on 3 June 1920, and died in Sunderland on 7 February 1948.
