Four: Captain J. F. M. Prinsep, The Essex Regiment

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, 2 clasps, The Nile 1884-85, Gemaizah 1888 (Lieut: J. F. M. Prinsep, 2/Essex. R.) second clasp loose as issued; Order of Osmanieh, 4th Class breast badge, silver-gilt and enamels; Khedive’s Star 1884-6; Royal Humane Society, small bronze medal (Successful), (Lieut. J. F. M. Prinsep. The Essex Regt. 23 Decr. 1884) with Second Award Bar, dated ‘19 Decr. 1885’, complete with top suspension buckle, the first three mounted as worn, the second with chips to most arms, otherwise good very fine (4) £800-1000

James Frederick Macleod Prinsep was commissioned Lieutenant in the Essex Regiment on 10 May 1882, and was promoted Captain on 6 February 1890. He served in the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 with the 2nd Battalion of the Essex Regiment (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive’s Star); also served in the operations near Suakin in December 1888, including the engagement at Gemaizah (mentioned in despatches, Clasp and 4th Class of the Osmanieh).

Lieutenant Prinsep was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 23rd December 1884, saved a private soldier from drowning, who had fallen into the Shaban Rapid, in the Nile, near Kanneck, and who was unable to swim (Case 22686). He has also received a Clasp for having, on the 19th December 1885, saved a Sudanese sailor from drowning in the Nile near El Sabon (Case 23020).
