Jesse Newsome was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, in 1859 and enlisted for General Service at Bradford, Yorkshire, on 13 December 1881. Posted to the Royal Highlanders (Black Watch), he served with the 1st Battalion in Egypt and the Sudan from 10 November 1882 to 30 April 1886. Transferring to the Army Reserve on 17 November 1889, he was discharged on 12 December 1892, after 12 years’ service.
