Henry Mead alias Henry Harris was born in the Parish of Temple Combe, Henstridge, Somerset, and enlisted into the 49th Foot at Dorchester on 18 July 1865. He served overseas in the East Indies, July 1866 to January 1875; Gibraltar, March 1881 to July 1882; Egypt, July 1882 to May 1883; Gibraltar, May 1883 to August 1884; Egypt, August 1884 to May 1885. He served in the campaigns in Egypt in 1882 and in the Eastern Soudan in 1885, including Suakin and Tofrek. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in October 1883, he was promoted to Lance-Sergeant in August 1883 and discharged at Reading on 20 July 1886. Sold with copied discharge papers and pay lists.
