John Sale/Sail was born in Birmingham and attested for the 8th Company, Royal Marine Artillery, on 12 February 1847, aged 21 years 5 months, a brass founder by trade. He served afloat as a Private and Gunner in H.M. Ships Hecate and Sphinx from 1 November 1849 to 22 July 1853, including the Burma campaign, and in H.M.S. Bulldog from 31 January 1854 to 25 March 1857, including the Baltic campaign. He was discharged on 13 May 1857. Sold with copied record of service and medal rolls.
