Three: Wheeler-Major John Green, ‘I’ Troop, Royal Horse Artillery

Crimea 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (John Green. I. Troop. R.H.A.) depot impressed naming; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (Wheeler Major J. Green, Depôt Bde., R.A.); Turkish Crimea 1855, Sardinian issue (John Green, I. Troop. R.H.A.) engraved naming, fitted with replacement ring suspension and T. B. Bailey Coventry silver ribbon brooch; together with related Volunteer Force L.S., V.R. (Sergt. H. T. Green. 1897), the Crimean medals with heavy edge bruising and contact wear, good fine, otherwise very fine (4) £500-600

‘I’ Troop, R.H.A. was present throughout the campaign in the Crimea, attached to the Cavalry division, and at the affair of the Bulganak, had the honour of firing the opening guns of the campaign. Together with ‘C’ Troop, they were the only Horse Artillery to qualify for all four clasps.

John Green was born in the Parish of Long Itchington, Warwickshire, and attested for the Royal Horse Artillery on 20 April 1853, aged 21 years. He was promoted to Sergeant in January 1858, and to Wheeler Major in April 1870. He was discharged on 10 May 1870 and awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal on 1 August following, together with a Gratuity of £15. Sold with copied discharge papers which confirm Crimea medal and four clasps.
