Queen’s Own Edinburgh Light Infantry Militia Officer’s 1869 Pattern Shako, a very rare example, the pattern similar to that of the HLI with sewn in cap lines and plaited front decoration, the blue cloth body with a red, white and blue dicing band, the frontal plate being an eight pointed silver star of the Order of the Thistle overlaid with a gilt, pierced circle bearing the motto of the Order, in the centre a gilt thistle spray all on a ground of green vitreous enamel, above the plate a circular boss in blackened wire bearing a bronze strung bugle horn, plume holder in bronze with a plain ball, the plume now faded to blue was most probably green, narrow leather chin strap present but one anchor point lacking, quilted brown silk sweat band and similar lining, retailed by ‘Cater & Co., 56, Pall Mall, London’, the diced band with severe mothing throughout, small moth patches near the sewn in cap lines otherwise very fine condition £800-1000
