John Livingstone was born in Omagh, County Tyrone and served during the Great War on the Western Front with the 13th (Service) Battalion (1 County Down), Royal Irish Rifles, landing in France on 4 October 1915. He was killed in action on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, when his battalion attacked Thiepval with the rest of the 36 (Ulster) Division, suffering heavy casualties. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France
